I see lots of dogs at Halloween dressed up in funny (and cute) costumes. Costumes can be fun if you spend some time before Halloween to get your dog used to wearing the costume. If you want to dress your dog for Halloween, here are some ideas on how to do it so your dog doesn't hate it.

Dogs have a way of stealing things, then running off with them. They especially enjoy your pursuit of them through the house, while they almost let you catch them before sprinting off again. Or even more dastardly, they wind up under the sofa or bed, holding your item hostage.

Group obedience classes aren't for every dog out there. In fact, you'd be surprised at how many dogs shouldn't be in a group class. That may surprise you, especially coming from someone who teaches group dog training classes for a living and who, by the way, happens to think that group classes are a real benefit to most dogs.

You may have heard of clicker training, maybe even seen it on tv, but still wonder what the heck is a clicker and how does it relate to training your dog. Most of my clients in my group classes haven't ever heard of clicker training. Some of them even come to class opposed to clicker training. Once they get a good look at what clicker training is, see how easy it is to do, and most importantly how fast they can teach their dog, they're hooked. They frequently come back to me, asking "What can we teach next - this is too much fun!"

I found the coolest little techie gadget when I attended BlogHer last month. It's a little camera called Dropcam and it's the perfect tool for you if you want to keep an eye on your dog while your away from the house.

What’s the Difference Between Stay and Wait?
There are bunnies and squirrels in our yard. I am hoping to avoid the carnage of dogs vs. itty-bitty wild creatures. I tell the dogs to wait while I open the back door and clap my hands several times in warning. When I’m satisfied that I’ve sounded the “dogs are coming” alarm, I release the dogs and they’re off, bounding into the yard in search of bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, or whatever else might be spending time in our fenced yard while the dogs aren’t looking.

Schooner is in socialization overdrive right now. I'm finding places to go every day so I can get him out and around lots of different sights and sounds. The more he sees in a happy and comfortable way, the less excited he'll be when it's time for him to settle in and get to work with his partner. We're still a good ways away from turn-in day, but the earlier he sees and experiences new situations, the faster he'll become a pro at handling the public life of a service dog. And the better service dog he'll be.
